Eight bison, who moved to North Ossetia from the nursery of the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve (Moscow region), were released into the Turmonsky nature reserve. Five males changed their place of residence - Muzgard, Mutanchik, Muyor, Mulenrouge and Muvinchi, as well as three females - Muzerati, Mugla and Mujina. All animals were born in the nursery last year. The Roszapovedtsentr of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported this on its website.

“The removal of young animals from the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve to the Turmonsky Nature Reserve in North Ossetia is important in restoring the population of Caucasian bison that were exterminated at the beginning of the last century. Large herbivores should return to mountain forests, capable of influencing the vegetation cover and providing diversity in the structure of the forest canopy. The heroes of the Nart epic would be pleased to know that the bison is returning to the Caucasus,” Vasily Demidov, deputy director for scientific work of the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve, is quoted in the message.

During the existence of the Central Bison Nursery, which was opened in the reserve in 1948, about 500 animals were exported from it to other nurseries and free populations of bison.

As reported in the Roszapovedtsentr, according to experts, Russia currently has the largest free-living population of bison in the world - Central Russian (Oryol-Kaluga-Bryansk). Its population is 1155 bison. In total, 2,355 bison live in Russia.

The department noted that at the beginning of the last century, as a result of burning forests, converting forest areas into agricultural land and unrestricted hunting, the bison disappeared from nature. Only a small number of animals survive in zoos. It took scientists about 80 years to create a free-living population and increase its numbers through breeding - first in zoos and nurseries, then in nature.

The bison is one of the priority objects of the animal world of the federal project “Preservation of biological diversity and development of ecological tourism”, the coordination and implementation of which is carried out by the Roszapovedtsentr.
