Egypt’s tourism ministry has closed nine tourist facilities for violating the country’s measures to contain the spreading of COVID-19, according to local media reports.
Egypt Independent reports that one of the rules violated was exceeding the number of customers allowed per establishment and those that provided shisha (Hookah) pipes banned under the COVID-19 measures.
The ministry said it deployed secret committees to inspect hotel facilities and tourism activities.
The Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Supervising Hotel Establishments and Tourist Activities Abdel Fattah al-Asi said the committees will continue with their impromptu inspections even during the holidays and will not hesitate to penalise violators of the COVID-19 measures.
The Egyptian government is expecting between $6 billion and $7 billion in tourism revenues this year.
