Mining enterprises usually cause concerns of environmentalists and local residents regarding the preservation of the natural environment. And this is due not only to changes in the landscape or harmful emissions, but also to the waste of underground workings accumulating on the earth's surface in the form of so-called "tails". Dumps of lifeless rocks disfigure the area, causing environmental damage.
However, modern technologies can radically change the situation. This is clearly demonstrated by the Chukaru Peki mine in Serbia, where gold mining is carried out using "green" technologies. 80 million dollars have been invested in projects related to environmental protection here.
Miners work at a depth of 530 meters in well-ventilated mines, the walls of which are concreted to avoid scree and leaks, and the groundwater is treated by a plant built specifically for wastewater treatment. But the main know-how of the enterprise was that all the spent ore does not go to the tailings dump, but returns to the already passed through underground sections. Thus, not only the developed horizon is strengthened, but also large areas in the vicinity of the mine are preserved for land use.
Despite the money spent, the company is increasing production, increasing profits every year. For two quarters of this year, the mine management company Zijin Mining reported an increase in revenue by $ 400 million. The technologies developed at the Chukaru Peki mine allow us to hope that in modern conditions, with a reasonable approach, mining can be carried out not only profitably, but also without much environmental damage.
