On the territory of the Zhiguli Nature Reserve (Samara Region), the Center for the Study and Conservation of Bats "Chetoptera Zhiguli" has appeared. Roszapovedtsentr reported this on its website.
“The purpose of creating the center is to popularize scientific activities in the study of bats,” the report says.
In the center, visitors can get reliable information about bats, their biology and ecology, as well as the history of long-term observations carried out in the reserve.
As noted in Roszapovedtsentr, the combination of mountainous and floodplain landscapes has led to the creation of unique conditions for the habitat of bats in these places of the Samara region. Bats are active only during the warm period, and spend six to seven months a year in hibernation.
“Today, in the Shiryaevsky adits, man-made caves left after limestone mining, one of the largest wintering grounds for bats in Europe lives, numbering more than 30,000 individuals of 8 species, the largest of which is a giant nocturnal,” the report says.
Zhiguli Nature Reserve, according to its director Roman Gorelov, is the only specially protected natural area in Russia where intensive research of this group of mammals is carried out year-round.
“The bats are the second order in terms of the number of species of all vertebrate animals of the protected Zhiguli,” Gorelov is quoted as saying.
