While Bolivia is gradually opening its borders after months of being forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residents of Chualluma, a poor area of the capital La Paz, are looking forward to the return of tourists.
From now on, they will be able to admire not only the colorful walls of the houses, but also the painted frescoes that adorn them.
For these works, the authorities allocated 500,000 euros to 140 local artists who repainted the walls of adobe houses in red, pink, yellow, green, blue and orange colors.
About 400 families, mostly members of the indigenous Aymara community, live in Chualluma, located on the Western slope of La Paz mountain at an altitude of 3,800 meters above sea level.
Similar to Chualluma house painting projects have been implemented in the rural village of Palmitas in Uruguay, the Mexican city of Pachuca, Buenavista in Bogota, as well as in a number of Brazilian favelas.
