Wildlife authorities in Namibia have warned tourists to be on the lookout for the rare desert lions that are battling starvation.
“We urge people visiting lion habitats in the [Kunene] region to exercise great caution. So far, we have received reports of two incidents where lions attacked people,” Environment ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda told The Namibian.
The starving lions had been attacking humans in the southern African country due to drought that has reduced their usual prey.
The Times reports that one starving lion attacked tourists who were settling down for the night in their tent.
This happened a day after a lion had attacked another tourist.
Muyunda said that they are reviewing and developing the country’s lion conservation and management plan to determine the best long-term sustainable management options on how we conserve lions given the changing environmental and climatic conditions.
