Barcelona hotels on the verge of bankruptcy due to COVID-19

Most hotels in Barcelona, traditionally very popular among tourists, are closed today.

The same few that continue to work are reorienting to new categories of customers to compensate for the drop in the number of foreign guests in recent months.

Some of the owners adapt their hotels to teleworking, while others offer long-term accommodation at reduced prices.

In 2019, hotels in Barcelona received 9.5 million tourists. Today, more than 75% of the city's hotels are closed, and many are on the verge of bankruptcy. Hotel occupancy is about 10%.

This year in Barcelona, where the share of tourism in the city budget was traditionally 12%, only one and a half million guests stayed for the night.

In the local press, Barcelona is already called the "Detroit of tourism", referring to the decline that the American city experienced after the delocalization of the automobile industry that ensured its prosperity.
