The Bangladesh government has allowed tourist destinations to open at half their capacity starting from August 19, warning everyone to follow health guidelines, including wearing masks outdoors.

Clubs and community centers, resorts, and entertainment venues across Bangladesh reopened to tourists on Thursday after being closed in phases for months since last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet of Ministers after the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) demanded the reopening of tourism facilities, as the sector has already suffered losses from the pandemic in the amount of $ 2.33 billion. The country's tourism industry employs about 4 million people, many have lost their jobs.

Bangladesh has stepped up its COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country since last month. Health Minister Zahid Maleque said 260 million doses of the vaccine are needed to ensure that 80 percent of the population is vaccinated to combat the outbreak of the pandemic.
