Amsterdam increases tourist tax

Travelers who want to visit Amsterdam this year will have to spend more. According to the city council of Amsterdam, starting in January, in addition to the already existing 7% tourist tax, an extra fee for guests is introduced.

It considers hotels, apartments, campsites and private premises, including those rented using the Airbnb service. In hotels, from now on, an additional 3 euros will be charged per night per person, at campsites - 1 euro, the tax rate on rented private premises is increased by 10%.

The same rule applies to sea and river cruise operators. Each passenger who is not a resident of the city will be charged an additional fee of 8 euros.

According to an official representative of the city council, the main reason for introducing additional fees is not the overcrowding of Amsterdam at all.

“Visitors will contribute more to the high costs of keeping the city safe and clean, and of keeping the public place like pavements, quays, bridges and streets in a good state,” said the representative.
