The press service of the Kurilsky Nature Reserve reported that a significant increase in the number of sable on its territory has been recorded over the past three years. Now there are about 1000 sables on the island, most of which live on the territory of the reserve.
Sable records are carried out annually from January to March by the method of winter route records. In 2022, there was a particularly sharp jump in the growth of the number of this animal. Then the total number of individuals on the island was almost 2000.
Since last year, the Kurilsky Nature Reserve and scientists from the N.I. Vavilov Institute of General Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences have begun to conduct genetic studies of the Kunashir sable population. The data obtained are necessary for a full-fledged comparative analysis with mainland and island sable populations.
Now the Kunashir sable is preparing for winter. The animals have already updated their fur cover. Local sables have a relatively light color, their head is lighter than their back, and the ends of the paws and tail have the darkest color.
