The press service of the Mospriroda reported that for the first time, experts met a bog turtle on a small floodplain pond in the Setun River Valley nature reserve. The appearance of new habitats of this species indicates that reptiles are developing new natural areas that are comfortable for living.
The bog turtle is included in the supervisory list of the Red Book of Moscow. Previously, this animal could be found in the natural and historical parks Izmailovo, Kuzminki-Lublino, Tushinsky, Bitsevsky Forest, Moskvoretsky, Tsaritsyno and in Serebryany Bor.
This type of turtle loves to live in swamps. On warm days, they crawl out onto the shore or trunks of trees growing near the water to bask in the sun. At this point, they are easy to photograph or film. Catching turtles is not worth it, as this causes disturbance to the animals.
Bog turtles are omnivorous, but prefer to eat worms, mollusks, dragonfly larvae, mosquitoes and wood lice, as well as small vertebrates, such as young snakes or chicks of waterfowl.
