The press service of the Russian Geographical Society announced the completion of the second stage of a joint integrated expedition with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation with the support of the Russian Arctic National Park to the island of Alexandra Land of the Franz Josef Land archipelago.

A seismic and infrasound monitoring station was installed on the territory of the national park. It has already shown its capabilities by recording an earthquake of magnitude 3.1 in the Haeckel Ridge zone on September 13. Registration of such seismic and acoustic events will allow tracking the reaction rates of the Arctic cryolithosphere to global climate changes, as well as studying the dynamics of Arctic glaciers. In the future, this may make it possible to determine in advance the threat of icebergs in the waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Geophysicists also continued to search for ancient earthquakes and conducted research on geotectonics and seismology. During the field work, six temporary seismic stations were installed. Scientists have found traces of strong paleozoic earthquakes in the relief and young sediments on the capes of Melekhov and Dvoy. Measurements were carried out at eight sites. Presumably, the focus of repeated strong earthquakes with an intensity of 8-9 points, which occurred several thousand to hundreds of years ago, has been identified. Scientists do not rule out that they may happen again in the future.

In addition, studies of glacial caves, geobotanical mapping of the area, and the study of marine mammal biodiversity were carried out.

In November, a scientific and technical council will be held, where scientists will review the results of research and outline promising areas for continuing this kind of comprehensive research on the island of Alexandra Land.
