The scientific expedition vessel Akademik Treshnikov has embarked on another voyage from St. Petersburg to Antarctica - 50 polar explorers and about 2,000 tons of cargo will be delivered there. This is necessary for the final stage of seasonal work of the 69th Russian Antarctic Expedition of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AAI).
"It is planned that in 133 days the vessel will pass through the Atlantic, Indian and Southern Oceans, approach the Antarctic stations Progress, Novolazarevskaya, Mirny and Bellingshausen, the Molodezhnaya field base and the Belarusian Vechernaya Mountain station. During this time, the polar explorers will receive fresh food, scientific equipment, equipment and materials for research and repair, as well as fuel. During the voyage from the ship, specialists will perform dozens of different scientific studies," the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia reported on its website.
The NES is expected to arrive at the port of Cape Town by the end of March, and reach the shores of Antarctica by mid-April. In mid–July, the ship will return to its home port of St. Petersburg.
Meanwhile, in Central Antarctica, the specialists of the 69th Russian Antarctic Expedition have completed the delivery of the necessary cargo to ensure the test wintering of the new Vostok complex.
"This season we will have to test the performance of the new wintering complex, evaluate in practice the amount of energy consumption, functionality and reliability of all engineering systems at extremely low temperatures – below -80 ° C. The main thing for a safe and comfortable wintering is a sufficient amount of energy. 12 reservoirs containing a two-year supply have been equipped at the station for this purpose," said Alexander Makarov, director of the AANI, quoted by the ministry.
The new wintering complex at the Vostok station was put into pilot operation at the end of January this year.
