Now the main part of the high-latitude scientific expedition "Pure Arctic-Vostok-77" is working in the Murmansk region. This is the first expedition of this scale in 40 years.
In the course of research in the field of carbon regulation, it was discovered that a separate mountain – the highest point of the Kolvitsky mountain range – still has no name. The staff of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences participating in the expedition plan to prepare an application for naming the mountain.
It remains to invent it. The question remains open and it was decided to find the answer to it through a contest for the best name of the mountain. The competition was announced on social networks of the public project "Clean Arctic".
The start of the one–year expedition "Clean Arctic - Vostok-77" was given on August 15 at the Murmansk seaport. The expedition will take place in the continental part of the Arctic with the participation of researchers from more than 20 centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and federal universities, severpost.ru reports.
The tasks of the expedition include studying the state of tundra and permafrost soils, mapping the industrial heritage of the USSR and modern transport infrastructure, microplastics research in northern reservoirs and territories of future carbon polygons, as well as sociological research and search for video and audio materials and books in the native languages of the indigenous peoples of the North.
The members of the expedition will do a lot of work to study the current state of the Arctic – in total, more than 700 people will conduct about 200 important scientific studies throughout the whole year.
Participants will have to walk 12.000 kilometers and overcome 11 time zones.
