The Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic will begin negotiations with airlines to launch charter flights from Russia to Svalbard, said the head of the Ministry of Regional Development Alexei Chekunkov.
According to him, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry has allowed the resumption of charter flights from Russia to Svalbard. The first flights are scheduled for 2024, flights can be launched from Moscow or Murmansk.
"Now we will look for an operator partner with the appropriate board in order to perform such flights. Svalbard, of course, will be a pearl for both Russian and international tourists," the minister said.
Russia, according to the Svalbard Treaty of 1935, has the right to develop the resources of the archipelago, primarily coal. Three settlements have been built here: Grumant, Pyramid and Barentsburg, rg.ru notes.
