The head of the public council of Roshydromet, Vadim Petrov, spoke about a unique environmental project that will allow reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from Norilsk Nickel enterprises by 45% from the 2015 level by 2025.
The national news agency Ecology reported that on October 25, Norilsk Nickel launched the pilot of the Sulfur Program at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant in Norilsk. This is a comprehensive environmental project to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.
Vadim Petrov was quoted as saying that Norilsk Nickel's sulfur program is a unique and largest environmental project in Russia. It provides for the capture and utilization of sulfur dioxide. The project's achievement of technological parameters will make it possible to meet the requirements to reduce the total volume of pollutant emissions in Norilsk by at least 20 percent in 2024.
According to the head of the public council of Roshydromet, the Sulfur Program is part of the federal project “Clean Air” of the national project “Ecology” and is an important element of the socio-economic development of Siberia.
To implement this project, a partial reconfiguration of metallurgical production was implemented and sulfur dioxide recycling facilities with the necessary infrastructure were built.
