The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported that the participants of the scientific and educational expedition managed to successfully carry out all the planned research.
In particular, the institute's oceanologists have collected comprehensive information about the natural environment in the water areas and on the islands of the White, Barents and Kara Seas in a changing climate. For the first time in the past few years, they have managed to collect an extensive array of data on the oceanographic section from Salm Island of Franz Josef Land to Cape Zhelaniya of Severny Island of Novaya Zemlya.
The results of these studies will be compared with estimates from previous years and will allow an assessment of the changes taking place in the exchange of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the ocean.
In addition, scientists conducted a study of the soil for contamination with technogenic aerosols, heavy metals and artificial radionuclides. To do this, they took samples of soils, mosses and lichens along the route of the expedition. The samples will be studied in the laboratories of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov.
The expedition lasted three weeks. On board the research vessel "Professor Molchanov", its participants passed through the waters of the islands of Novaya Zemlya, Franz Josef Land, as well as the White, Barents and Kara Seas.
The expedition was attended by 55 people, including 22 students and graduate students from 13 scientific and educational institutions and organizations.
