The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced the start of the creation of a state system for background monitoring of permafrost. Its first point has already been opened in Salekhard. The system will be deployed at the meteorological stations of Roshydromet.

"The first thermometric well was launched in Salekhard on the territory of the Yamalo-Nenets Center for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring - a branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Ob-Irtysh Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring" of Roshydromet. research institute," the statement said.

The monitoring network will include 140 points that make continuous automatic measurements of permafrost temperature at different depths. The technology for arranging thermometric wells and data transmission was tested in the Russian Far North and the Svalbard archipelago.

As expected, 20 observation points will be equipped in 2023. Another 58 points will be launched in a year. It is planned to fully deploy the monitoring system by the end of 2025.
