The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that in January 2024, pilot operation of the new Vostok wintering complex in Central Antarctica will begin. Six specialists from the Russian Antarctic Expedition and 30 technicians from Zapsibgazprom will test the operability and reliability of all life support systems during the Antarctic winter.
A team of specialists has already arrived at the Vostok station and the first sledge-tracked trek, which delivered about 190 tons of cargo to complete the construction of the complex. The builders plan to assemble two of the five modules of the station by February 2024. They will be used to store fuel reserves and duplicate equipment. In addition, the finishing of the three modules assembled last season will be completed in the same time frame. By the end of next year, it is expected that the interior decoration of all premises will be completed.
It is planned that Russian polar explorers will be able to celebrate the housewarming in early 2025 as part of the 70th anniversary of the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE). The new wintering complex will become a platform for the implementation of large-scale scientific projects. It will house scientific laboratories, residential and public spaces, energy centers and technical units, a medical unit, as well as a garage.
It is expected that almost 2.6 thousand tons of cargo – construction materials and fuel - will be delivered to the Vostok station this year.
