To develop tourism in the Russian Arctic, it is necessary to create an appropriate infrastructure in Chukotka, Yakutia and the Magadan region. This opinion was expressed by the vice-president of the association "Alliance of Travel Agencies" Aleksan Mkrtchyan.
According to him, the development of Arctic tourism faces three problems: prices, underdeveloped infrastructure and climatic features.
If the frosts cannot be influenced, then the first two issues can be solved, Mkrtchyan said. In particular, it is necessary to build new hotels in order to reduce the cost of living per day, as well as to develop own production of products. This requires the support of local businesses and the attraction of new investors.
The expert stated that there is virtually no tourist infrastructure in Chukotka, so only 15,000 – 20,000 tourists visited the region during the year. Yakutia is most often visited, where 200,000 people visited in 2023, Mkrtchyan said.
In order to attract people, the tourist cashback program is necessary precisely in the directions of the Far North, the expert is convinced.
