Three search parties of the expedition "Pure Arctic - East-77" in the Murmansk region found 12 books in the Sami language, goarctic.ru reports.
The Sami have about 180 words to tell about the state of the snow, and several hundred formulations to describe the reindeer. One of the tasks of librarians is to preserve the Northern languages, including those that are on the verge of extinction.
It is they who, together with scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences, are engaged in documenting and digitizing the content discovered during the expedition.
During the annual expedition, scientists explore the dialects and writing of the indigenous peoples of the North who speak the Uralic languages. This language family includes Nenets and its closest relative – Selkup, as well as Santy, Svenki, and Sepsi languages.
The expedition "Clean Arctic - Vostok-77" is a joint program of the centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the public project "Clean Arctic" – for the first time the efforts of scientists and public volunteers are united for such a large-scale work. The start of the one-year expedition was given on August 15 in Murmansk.
