The initiative to create a Red Book of the Arctic was announced at a meeting of the section on Arctic Issues and Biodiversity Conservation of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Federal Service for Supervision of Nature Management, which was held at the site of the Arctic Development Project Office (PORA).
The Red Book of the Russian Arctic Zone is designed to accumulate and integrate information about rare and endangered species of animals and plants included in the Red Books of the Arctic Regions of Russia.
The Arctic Red Book may be an electronic database. This, in particular, will allow displaying data about species or taxa with reference to space.
Electronic databases will also allow accumulating and analyzing new incoming scientific and monitoring information.
The creation of the Red Book of the Russian Arctic meets the goals and objectives of the Working group on the conservation of Arctic flora and fauna (CAFF) of the Arctic Council. The broader initiative "Red Book of Circumpolar Flora and Fauna of the Arctic" can be implemented by all member countries of the Arctic Council within the framework of the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program and in cooperation with the Arctic Biodiversity Data Service project and national cartographic agencies of the Arctic countries, the press service of PORA reports.
