At the same time, the total amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean during the period of maximum ice cover was 4.6% less than the average annual values over the past forty years.
Specialists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute presented data on the hydrometeorological situation in the Arctic. According to them, the ice coverage of the eastern seas of the Russian Arctic in 2022 was increased. In particular, the highest ice coverage was observed in the Chukchi and East Siberian seas over the past 12 years.
However, the total amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean at the end of June, the period of maximum ice cover, amounted to 10,504 million square km. This is 4.6% less than the average multi-year values over the past 40 years. The negative anomaly of the total ice area was formed mainly due to low ice cover in the Greenland, Barents and Kara seas.
The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute added that the scientists also discussed new opportunities for obtaining hydrometeorological data from the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. Thus, for the next few years, Russia is planning to launch new spacecraft designed for hydrometeorological monitoring of the Arctic zone. The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute is currently implementing a project to deploy a network of automatic drifting weather stations.
