The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported that the research vessel "Akademik Tryoshnikov" has departed from St. Petersburg to Brazil. There, in the port of Rio Grande, the Second Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition will be launched.
The Russian-Brazilian project is being organized by a team from the AARI in conjunction with the Polar and Climate Center of the Institute of Geosciences of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, which is the leading institution for snow and ice research in Brazil. This is the only Brazilian group authorized to conduct research in the interior of the Antarctic ice sheet.
In late November, the "Akademik Tryoshnikov" will take on board more than 60 scientists from Russia, Brazil, Argentina, China, Chile, India, and Peru. For two months, they will work together to study the natural environment of Antarctica.
The vessel will visit coastal stations in India, China, and Russia. The "Akademik Tryoshnikov" is scheduled to return to Brazil in late January 2025, where its participation in this international expedition will conclude. Then the vessel will continue its work in Antarctica in the interests of the Russian Antarctic Expedition and will return to St. Petersburg in June 2025.
