The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced the completion of an experiment on growing vegetables at the Vostok Antarctic station. It was also attended by specialists of the Agrophysical Research Institute and the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"As a result, it was established that in two greenhouses of various types using groundless technology "panoponics" on 1 square meter of area per year, it is possible to grow up to 100 kg of cucumbers, up to 149 kg of cabbage and many other leafy and leaf-stemmed vegetable crops, as well as up to 29 kg of tomatoes and up to 11 kg of sweet pepper", - the message says.
Thus, the greenhouse will not only be able to please the eyes of polar explorers who will work in the new Vostok wintering complex, but also replenish their diet with fresh vegetables. Currently, technologies for growing wild berries – blackberries, blueberries and strawberries - are being worked out at the biopolygon at the Agrophysical Institute. After successful test results and testing of the method of growing forest crops, the new phytotechcomplex-3 will be sent to the Vostok station.
