The press service of the Russian Geographical Society told about the new scientific project of the Moscow State University. Specialists from the University's Geography department will study extreme natural phenomena in the Arctic. They will try to assess the risks that may arise from the reduction of sea ice, the degradation of permafrost and other consequences of global warming.

"The scientific project "Extreme natural phenomena in the Arctic in the conditions of modern climate" is aimed at studying interrelated natural processes occurring in the waters of the marginal Arctic seas and adjacent land areas. The study brought together the teams of the Departments of Oceanology, Meteorology and Climatology of the Faculty of Geography, as well as the Department of Physics of the Sea and Land Waters of the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University," the message says.

Experts will try to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the impact of modern climate change on the frequency and characteristics of extreme natural phenomena in the Arctic that occurred in the first two decades of the XXI century and are projected in the future.

Work on the project has already begun. A group of mathematicians, physicists and oceanologists has developed and tested a software technology that allows us to assess the repeatability of storm surges and surges, identify the causes of their occurrence and create possible scenarios for development. Scientists have already obtained data for the Kara and Barents Seas.

In addition, dangerous natural phenomena characteristic of the Arctic land, such as ice, are being actively studied. Scientists also focus on the causes, repeatability and speed of winds in special mesoscale polar cyclones, whose sizes are much smaller than ordinary atmospheric vortices.

Modeling of extreme natural phenomena in high latitudes will continue next year. To do this, specialists use the latest data and modern computer technologies.
