In the vicinity of the village of Cape Kamenny and Cape Marre-Sale on Yamal, expeditions of the “Green Arctic”, an environmental movement to clean up historically accumulated garbage, took place. More than 30 volunteers collected and prepared for disposal over 80 tons of scrap metal and municipal solid waste, including almost 2,200 rusty barrels. About 20 hectares of the coast of the Ob Bay and Baydaratskaya Bay of the Kara Sea have been cleared. The government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO) reported this on its website.

“Yamal has already accumulated extensive experience in cleaning the northern territories from waste generated as a result of intensive development of the Arctic during the Soviet period. It was the Green Arctic volunteers who helped restore the pristine beauty of the nature of the Bely and Vilkitsky islands. In just a few years, they managed to remove more than 2,400 tons of scrap metal from two islands in the Kara Sea - this is a huge contribution to our common cause of caring for Yamal. There is still a lot of work ahead, but with such a team we can achieve real environmental records,” the message quotes the words of the Governor of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Dmitry Artyukhov.

The expeditions became part of a large-scale project to clean up the territories of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and preserve the unique nature of the North. This summer, about 30 different events are taking place in the region - environmental picnics, cleanup days and educational events for local residents.

The implementation of the “Ecology within” project continues in ten municipalities. Teams of young volunteers, led by Green Arctic volunteers, clean up trash in their communities. The promotion will last until August 15.

“The harvesting season will end with the final expedition of the Green Arctic to the settled village of Polyarny. It will be held from August 7 to September 3, and more than 40 volunteers will take part in it,” the message says.

Volunteer events were held with the support of the “Hometowns” social investment program of the Gazprom Neft company.
