The press service of the Clean Arctic project reported that at the moment the main staff of the high-latitude scientific expedition is working in the Murmansk region. This is the first expedition of this scale in forty years.
“In the process of research in the field of carbon regulation, it was discovered that a separate mountain - the highest point of the Kolvitsky mountain range - still does not have a name. Employees of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences participating in the expedition plan to prepare an application for assigning a name to the mountain,” the message says .
Scientists note that as the lands were developed, mountains, rivers and lakes were the first to receive names, which served as landmarks for residents and sailors. The nameless mountain was not visible because of the neighboring peaks. It can only be seen from the east, where there are no villages on the swampy plains. From the sea it is covered by lower, but closer peaks.
A competition for the best name for the mountain has already been announced on the social networks of the Clean Arctic project. The report notes that the options could include the names of organizations whose activities helped implement the Clean Arctic - Vostok-77 expedition.
The start of the year-long expedition “Clean Arctic - Vostok-77” was given on August 15 in the Murmansk seaport. The expedition will take place across the continental Arctic with the participation of researchers from more than 20 centers of the Russian Academy of Sciences and federal universities. Participants will have to travel 12,000 kilometers and cross 11 time zones.
Scientists will study the state of tundras and permafrost soils, draw up maps of the industrial heritage of the USSR and modern transport infrastructure, study microplastics in northern reservoirs and the territories of future carbon test sites, and also conduct sociological research and search for video and audio content and books in the native languages of the indigenous peoples of the North .
