During the large–scale high-latitude expedition "Clean Arctic - Vostok-77", the first stage of which passes through the territories of the Murmansk region, the participants inspected the coast of the Kola Peninsula for the identification of littered territories.
On maps of the USSR period and according to local residents, 41 abandoned objects of economic activity were previously discovered on the coast of the Kola Peninsula.
The task of the expedition was the most complete collection of information about these objects and what needs to be disposed of on the spot, and what needs to be taken to the "Mainland", severpost.ru reports.
The collection of preliminary information showed that out of 41 objects, 23 have already been put in order by the forces of the region, the Ministry of Defense or volunteers of the public project "Clean Arctic".
"We have seen in the Murmansk region a lot of work on the conservation or liquidation of facilities. The rapid and systematic work of the region, federal services, and Clean Arctic volunteers is visible. By the end of the expedition, we will prepare not only a map of the objects that have yet to be removed, but also figures for the work already done. I think no country in the world can boast of such applied work on the general cleaning of its shores and islands. The Arctic is rapidly becoming clean," said Oksana Tolstykh, head of the expedition's cartographic group.
As part of the expedition, a map of the objects of the economic heritage of the USSR to be disposed of or preserved is being formed. Following the results of the expedition, this map will be handed over to the structures responsible for the large-scale "general cleaning of the Arctic", which is being conducted in Russia.
According to the head of the Arctic Development Project Office Andrey Nagibin, the locations requiring cleaning will be analyzed for their inclusion in the cleaning plan for next year in terms of the possibility of delivering the necessary equipment there, logistics of volunteers, as well as the removal of waste collected there.
