On July 14, a large-scale cleaning of the Clean Arctic public project took place on the territory of Maysky Park in Arkhangelsk. Volunteers were joined by Governor of the region Alexander Tsybulsky, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Muraev, Head of the Department of Natural Resources of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry of the Arkhangelsk Region Alexei Mirgorodsky, Mayor of Arkhangelsk Dmitry Morev, and Head of the Clean Arctic project office Andrey Nagibin.

During the cleaning, the participants not only cleaned up about a kilometer of Maysky Park on the banks of the Northern Dvina, but also discussed the integrated development of the Arctic regions, as well as the popularization and prosperity of science in the Arctic, in particular in the Arkhangelsk region.

“Clean Arctic and other eco-initiatives are very good and correct projects that need to be replicated, shown, and I would like as many young people as possible to participate in them. Today, living in the north is quite comfortable in terms of practice. And with such actions, our joint efforts with the public and business, we can make this life no worse than in any other region of Russia, we can only raise the temperature. We have no slogans, we prove by deeds the importance of our northern territory, because much of what we are proud of in Russia today originated here, in the north,” said Alexander Tsybulsky.

It was noted that one of the federal universities of Russia, NArFU, operates in the region, which focuses on the scientific and personnel development of the Arctic. The university is the leading scientific and educational polar center in the Russian North, which corresponds to the global state task of strengthening geopolitical positions in the Arctic. That is why he is a member of state and international councils in matters of education, as well as in the field of scientific and industrial development of the Arctic territories. On the day of cleaning on Maysky Beach, the return from the expedition of the Arctic floating university is also expected.

“For many years, NArFU has been implementing the unique project “Floating University”, when university students, having passed the competition in advance, on a real research vessel enter the waters of the Northern Sea Route and go to the northernmost territories of the Russian Federation, conduct research there, take various samples, assess the anthropogenic load that has been on this territory for a long time, offer options for restoring the environment. Today it is a highly demanded project, in which children from all over the country participate. We will continue to develop,” the governor said.

During the cleaning, a proposal was made to combine the efforts of the Clean Arctic volunteers with the scientific research of NArFU students and other universities in the region in order to conduct field expeditions within the framework of the project with maximum benefit for the Arctic.

According to Andrey Nagibin, this year it is planned to double the amount of waste collected compared to the previous Clean Arctic season, and cleaning in the Arkhangelsk region makes a significant contribution to this ambitious goal: “In early July, we already cleaned up the territory of the Arkhangelsk region. It turned out to cover three locations at once: Moseev Island, as well as Brevennik and Kego Islands, where they collected about three tons of waste. But we are not going to stop there - ahead is cleaning in the village of Pokrovsky on the coast of the White Sea."

“Every year, cleaning up the Arctic territories unites the country’s volunteers,” said Igor Muraev, Minister of Natural Resources and Timber Industry. - Since the launch of the Clean Arctic federal initiative, the Arkhangelsk region has been actively participating in it. The implementation of the project continues in the municipalities of the region. One of the key events this year was the May Park event.”

Along the coastline of Maysky Park, volunteers, local residents and guests (about 200 people in total) have collected and will be sent for recycling scrap metal, tires, branches and other waste. To help the volunteers, shovels, rakes, crowbars, as well as chainsaws and a gas cutter were issued - they had to cut metal reinforcement from reinforced concrete. With the transportation of the collected bulky waste, such as logs or large reinforced concrete structures, a backhoe loader helped.

The third season of "Clean Arctic" started on Polar Explorer's Day, June 21, in Karelia. Then the volunteers cleaned up in Zhigansk (Yakutia) - there the activists collected over 26 tons of waste: metal, deadwood and plastic. Participants of the second All-Russian Forum-Festival of Volunteers “Arctic. The ice has broken, even at night they worked on the shores of the Kola Bay, and in Pechenga they improved the places of residence of the soldiers of the North Military District - they installed sites for the collection of MSW.
