Famous traveler Fyodor Konyukhov announced preparations for an expedition to the North Pole to set a new world record. The crew of the nuclear icebreaker "50 years of Victory" of FSUE Atomflot will help him in this.
According to the press service of the enterprise, it is planned that in July 2024 Konyukhov will fly 900 kilometers on a two-seater motorized paraglider to the North Pole and land on a drifting ice floe.
Thus, two world records will be set at once. Previously, no one had made long-term flights and landings in an ultralight aircraft in this area.
The expedition will take place during the period of tourist flights to the North Pole. The crew of the nuclear icebreaker 50 Years of Victory will provide delivery to one of the drifting ice floes in the area of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, and then three weeks later will pick up travelers from the North Pole.
At the top of the planet, Konyukhov plans to conduct research on the presence of microplastics in the ocean.
"I will drill holes, take samples, pump them through filters," the traveler said. - I will fold the filters and then give them to the Institute of Oceanology. And they will check if there is microplastic in the current that goes through the North Pole."
Atomflot and Fyodor Konyukhov already have successful cooperation experience. The Clean Arctic project started in July 2021 with the expedition of the famous traveler to the North Pole aboard the nuclear icebreaker 50 Years of Victory.
Then Konyukhov landed on an ice floe and collected data on the concentration of microplastics for the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology.
