The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported that the airfield at the Cape Baranova Ice Base research station is already ready to operate in polar night conditions. Specialists installed modern lighting, signaling and radio navigation equipment on the runway.
“With the development of air traffic on Bolshevik Island in the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, a large-scale scientific and logistics center will be formed for research programs, logistics and rescue operations,” the statement says.
The new airfield at the Cape Baranova Ice Base station was launched in April of this year. It has already been successfully used to deliver polar explorers and cargo to the North Pole-41 drifting station and to the Barneo camp. The runway can accommodate aircraft on wheeled chassis such as An 74, An 72, An 26 and An 12. In the future, it is planned to expand the capabilities of the airfield to accommodate heavy Il 76s.
In the future, the Cape Baranova Ice Base will be able to become a large transport and logistics hub. It will become a supply center for high-latitude Arctic expeditions and can be used as one of the strongholds for the development of navigation along the Northern Sea Route and in the high-latitude Arctic, as well as rescue operations of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
