The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced the start of work on the creation of a system for "Climate and environmental monitoring of the Russian Arctic seas". An observation module for greenhouse gas flows was equipped at the drifting polar station "North Pole-41". In addition, the observation deck in the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago has been upgraded.

Scientists note that the average annual concentrations of carbon dioxide in the Arctic atmosphere and the absorption of CO2 by the waters of the Arctic Ocean are increasing. Over the past few years, the average annual flow of carbon dioxide for the waters of the Kara and Laptev seas has also been increasing.

"Estimates of the interannual variability of greenhouse gas concentrations at polar stations also show a positive increase, which in turn intensifies the flow of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the ocean. The reason for the observed effect was a combination of factors, the main of which is global warming," the report says.

Experts note that the control of greenhouse gases allows you to estimate the rate of warming. In the Arctic, the climate is warming two to three times faster than anywhere else on the planet. Changes in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere accelerate and enhance cyclical processes.

Due to the reduction of the summer sea ice cover in the Arctic seas, the area of open water is increasing. There is an influx of warm Atlantic waters rich in nutrients. As a result, phytoplankton is actively developing, consuming carbon dioxide from water and producing organic carbon.

According to scientists, the recorded growth of primary production confirms the data on the reduction of reserves of mineral nitrogen and phosphorus, which are nutrients for phytoplankton algae. But this process is not endless. In the future, as the supply of nutrients decreases, productivity growth in the Laptev Sea will slow down. Biological productivity in the seas of the Russian Arctic is expected to stabilize at a new, higher level.

In the future, the network of observations of climate gas flows will be expanded. A network of drifting buoys in the marine and coastal parts of the Russian Arctic will be added to the already existing complexes for accounting for the CO2 content in the atmosphere at AANI hospitals, allowing for continuous transmission of information on the state of the environment via satellite communication channels according to specified parameters.
