The Chinese authorities plan to launch a manned expedition to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. If China manages to reach the Arctic seabed, it will become the second country after Russia to succeed in doing so, neftegaz.ru reports.
The mission will be led by the research vessel Tan Suo San Hao. This is the newest Chinese polar ice class research vessel of a new generation of domestic Arctic icebreakers. The underwater vehicle will also be domestic, although previously all equipment was of foreign origin.
In the Chinese White Paper for 2018, China is defined as a "near-Arctic state". Apparently, confirming its status, the PRC began to actively develop its activities in the Arctic. In the summer and autumn of 2024, China sent three icebreakers to the Arctic, one of them visited Murmansk.
China and the Russian Federation conducted the first ever joint patrol of the Arctic, having traveled almost 12,000 nautical miles and found themselves in close proximity to the coast of Alaska, and at the end of navigation they managed to deliver equipment for Arctic LNG-2 project.
