Yamal scientists are completing the creation of a carbon landfill in Labytnangi. It will appear in the area of the Ob station and will enter the international system of research hospitals of carbon balance and air quality. This was reported by the portal of the government of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YANAO).
"The Yamal carbon landfill will become a monitoring site. Scientists will find out how much carbon the Arctic territory absorbs from the atmosphere and how much greenhouse gas it produces. The study will cover hundreds of kilometers, including the territories of Labytnanga and Salekhard," the report says.
Currently, the installation of the laboratory building has been completed at the landfill, a year-round power supply has been installed. The builders have begun the construction of a cameral module, where they will equip a warehouse for storing soil samples, a room for scientific discussions and a recreation room. All this will allow scientists to process the results directly on the spot.
The carbon landfill on Yamal will be the first in the Arctic.
"The location of the landfill on the northern border of the forest and at the same time on the southern border of permafrost distribution opens up wide opportunities for managing ecosystem flows of greenhouse gases, including tundra afforestation, regulation of water levels on peatlands," the government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District noted.
