The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced the start of the 69th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE). The scientific expedition vessel "Akademik Fedorov" will deliver its participants and necessary cargo to Antarctica. In addition, it will transport wintering personnel of the 68th RAE.

The ship's route will run through three oceans: Indian, Atlantic and Southern. Specialists will carry out scientific oceanological, ice, biological and meteorological measurements directly from board.

In Antarctica, the ship will visit the Progress and Mirny stations, the seasonal bases Oasis Bangera and Molodezhnaya, as well as the Mount Vechernyaya station of the Belarusian Antarctic Expedition.

At the end of December, another vessel will set sail for Antarctica - the R/V Akademik Treshnikov. He will work in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean at the seasonal bases Russkaya, Leningradskaya and Molodezhnaya. The ship will also visit the year-round stations Bellingshausen, Mirny, Progress, Novolazarevskaya and the Belarusian base of Mount Vechernyaya.

As expected, the main event of the expedition will be the technological launch of a new wintering complex at Vostok station in January 2024. To achieve this, the traditional duration of the seasonal work cycle has been increased by more than a month. The station is planned to be put into operation in January 2025.

As part of the expedition, several dozen scientific works are planned, most of which are aimed at monitoring the Antarctic environment and studying natural processes related to global climate change. The priority scientific tasks of the new season will also be studies of sea ice and the marginal zone of glaciers, oceanological work in the marginal seas of the Southern Ocean, geological and geophysical work, comprehensive studies of the subglacial Lake Vostok and the paleoclimate of the Earth in the area of the Russian Antarctic station Vostok.
