In 2023, about 53 million rubles were allocated from the regional and federal budgets to the indigenous peoples of the North in the Murmansk Region to ensure traditional economic activities, said Andrey Chibis, the governor of the region.

He congratulated the indigenous community on the upcoming International Sami Day, which is celebrated annually on February 6.

"More than 1,300 representatives of the Sami people live in the Murmansk region. We understand how important it is to preserve and develop their heritage, following modern trends and using new technologies to promote Sami culture," Chibis said.

According to him, the support of the authorities allows the indigenous peoples of the North to engage in reindeer husbandry, receive land plots for grazing deer.

They are also allowed to harvest wood for their own needs free of charge and receive medicine with a doctor's prescription free of charge in rural areas. Men and women who have reached the age of 55 and 50, respectively, are entitled to a social pension in the areas of traditional residence of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, as was previously reported by b-port.com.
