The press service of the national park "Land of the Leopard" reported that the camera trap recorded an individual of an extremely rare animal, the Amur goral, previously unknown to scientists. In the unique video, the artiodactyl cautiously sneaks along the rocky hill of the national park.
Scientists expect that the obtained images from the camera trap will help to establish the number of gorals in the "Land of the Leopard". This species is listed in the International Red Book as "Vulnerable". Even the approximate number of these representatives of the goat subfamily is not known to science. There are supposedly only about 1,500 individuals worldwide. The Russian population is divided into small groups, one of which lives in the "Land of the Leopard".
This is only the ninth time in 11 years of operation of the national park that scientists have managed to capture goral. Experts plan to continue their research.
Gorals lead a secretive lifestyle. They are well adapted to rocky terrain, and their distribution is closely related to mountainous landscapes.
This species is distributed in Northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula and the Russian Far East.
