The United Arab Emirates has unveiled plans to build a new state-of-the-art passenger terminal at Dubai International Airport. The project will cost $34.8 billion and is expected to take 10 years to complete the main phase. When the terminal, which is essentially a new airport, is fully operational, it will have a capacity of 260 million passengers per year, making it the largest in the world.

According to the approved master plan, the new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport will be 2.5 times larger than the entire existing airport - it will cover an area of 70 sq km. There will be 400 boarding gates, five parallel runways, and the implementation of the latest aviation technologies will allow the handling of 12 million tonnes of cargo per year. The terminal will be accessible by metro, bus or urban air transport.

One of the largest and busiest hubs in the world, Dubai Airport handled 86.9 million passengers last year, with an absolute record of 89 million passengers set in 2018. In 2023, the airport handled 416,405 flights, with more than 100 airlines flying through Dubai to 260 destinations.
