An environmental relay race to clean up Arctic territories in all municipalities of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO) has been launched in Yamal. The eco-relay race is being held as part of the "Future of the Arctic" project.
The southernmost city of Yamal, Novy Urengoy, was the first to take up the eco-relay race. Each of the 13 municipalities of the autonomous okrug will conduct an environmental cleanup for a week and then pass the baton to the next municipality.
In September, the most active participants in the action will receive diplomas and valuable prizes. The evaluation criteria include the number of volunteers, the amount of garbage collected, and the quality of work on the public promotion of the environmental action.
As Senator Vladimir Pushkarev from Yamal reported, the idea for the action was proposed by students from the Yamal Multidisciplinary College in Salekhard.
According to him, it will become part of the work to preserve the ecological balance in the region, will draw attention to environmental problems, and will emphasize the importance of the active participation of all residents.
This is not the only environmental initiative proposed by students from Salekhard. Among the projects they have developed are cleaning up unauthorized landfills, creating a green zone near the Yamal Multidisciplinary College with the planting of trees by graduates, organizing recreation areas for citizens, and new tourist routes in the region.
