The press service of the Wrangel Island Nature Reserve announced the completion of work on the first catalog of gray whales. The specialists of the reserve systematized photographs of representatives of this species found in the protected water area.
Gray whales of the Chukchi-California population come to the protected water area every summer to feed. Here they feed on invertebrates and crustaceans during the ice-free period, from August to November.
"The catalog includes photographs of the sides and tail fins of about 20 animals. Even such a small amount of data has already yielded some interesting results. For example, it was found out that one of the whales visited the protected area at least three times from 2006 to 2016," the report says.
