The press service of the Kurilsky Nature Reserve told about the results of winter route surveys in the Southern Kuril Islands. The scientists analyzed and summarized the data, as well as made a comparative analysis of the materials of the ZMU over the past ten years.
The research was carried out on the territory of the Kurilsky Nature Reserve and the Small Kuriles Nature Reserve on the islands of Kunashir and Shikotan. The sable became the leader in numbers among wild animals for which records were conducted in Kunashir. Scientists have recorded 1,184 individuals. The high number of this animal has been maintained since 2021.
In addition, 386 foxes, 304 weasels and 188 white hares were counted in Kunashir. On Shikotan, records are kept only for the common fox. Scientists have recorded 111 individuals.
"In general, in the Kurilsky Nature Reserve, compared with the data of 2023, the number of weasels increased by 3 times, the number of white hare decreased by 2.5 times and the common fox by 1.5 times," the message says.
At the same time, the report notes that the population waves of animals are within the average values, when a small increase is replaced by a decline in numbers.
