The Department of Science of the Oryol Polesie National Park reported on the results of annual monitoring and accounting activities. At the beginning of February this year, scientists conducted an inventory of bison and confirmed the increase in the number of this rare species.
"In 2024, the population of free-living bison of the Oryol polesie has overcome a serious milestone and has 723 individuals, of which 92 are calves. It should be noted that the population is steadily growing," the message says.
The annual accounting of the bison population is a multi–layered array of information about its condition, dynamic indicators, compliance with calculated and actual data, the size and nature of the use of the mastered "possessions". Scientists used in their work not only the information they received by classical and innovative methods. Information was also collected about meetings of bison or the discovery of their traces of vital activity from nature users of neighboring territories.
In addition, winter route accounting works were carried out in the national park. A comparison of the results obtained with the figures of previous years confirmed the stability of the number of species living in the Oryol Polesie. This, in turn, indicates the optimal living conditions of animals and the high-quality work of the protection department.
