Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) is making concerted efforts to attract 2 million tourists by 2020 from about 1.5 million tourists last year, an official has said.

The board managing director Devota Mdachi was quoted by VoyagesAfriq as saying that they had embarked on road shows in Israel, India and in China to market the East African country as tourist destination.

She said more road shows were earmarked for South Korea next year as the Asian country.

“We are also investing a lot in the traditional market, the USA, the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Australia and Spain because we still see a number of tourists coming from those markets and there’s great interest in what Tanzania has to offer,” said Mdachi.

The TTB boss also said as part of the promotion of new tourist products, the country recently launched a campaign that seeks to promote filming in Tanzania.

“We have beautiful filming hotspots and we’ve already set a meeting for people from Hollywood to come and see the highlights for themselves, and we believe that in good time Tanzania can be the new Hollywood in Africa,” she said.

Tanzania is home to the renowned treeless Serengeti National Park and Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Tourism revenue in Tanzania $2.43 billion in 2018 compared with $2.19 billion in 2017, according to data released by Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa last April. Tanzania’s tourism sector is expected to contribute 18.3% to the country’s GDP by 2020.
