Specialists from the Scientific Center for Arctic Studies are working on a project that will create a dynamically changing map of the state of permafrost in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The regional government reported this on its website.

“The map will provide quick access to data on the state of permafrost and the main characteristics of soils. It will reflect not only information for the current year, but also a forecast for a period of up to 50 years. Data will be loaded into the map from specialized sensors installed throughout the district - currently there are 71 of them. Access to the map will be open to everyone,” the message says.

The information will be useful primarily to research institutes, educational institutions and construction companies. It will make it possible to monitor the condition of capital construction projects, ensure stable operation of fuel and energy facilities, civil and industrial infrastructure of the district, and timely develop technologies and materials for buildings and roads.

“Climate changes, which are visible to everyone in the weather, lead to invisible but widespread changes in ecological and geological systems. For Yamal, the issue of the state of permafrost is practical and decisive when choosing the types of building foundations, laying highways and roads, and the functional purpose of the territories,” the portal quotes the words of Artemy Antipov, head of the “Permafrost Map of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug” project.
