On May 12, it was exactly 100 years since the founding of the Caucasian State Natural Biosphere Reserve, which is the largest mountain-forest reserve in Europe and the main component of the "Western Caucasus" object from the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. Its total area exceeds 280 thousand hectares, it is located in the Krasnodar Territory, Adygea and Karachay-Cherkessia and borders on Abkhazia. The bison population, which lives in the Caucasian Reserve, was completely exterminated in 1927. Scientists have made great efforts to restore it by crossing bison hybrids and bison brought here from the Askania-Nova steppe reserve with the Caucasian subspecies. Today, the number of the species exceeds 1,100 individuals.
