Specially protected areas located near Baikal are actively preparing for the upcoming tourist season, the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Zapovednoe Pribaikalie" reported. The trend towards an increase in the number of guests of the Baikal National Park has been observed for several years. An increase in tourist flow is expected this year as well.
In 2023, more than 180 thousand people issued a permit to visit the Baikal National Park. In the first quarter of this year, the number of people wishing to visit the western protected shore of Baikal has grown by 30% compared to the same period last year.
As the number of guests increases, so does the amount of tourist infrastructure around the lake. The message notes that in the framework of tourism development on Baikal, it is necessary to develop a balance between the needs of tourists and the preservation of specially protected natural territories.
The press service also said that another important problem is on the agenda. Poachers often hunt from the water, taking advantage of the fact that it is not included in the protected area. This creates an obstacle for the full-fledged protection of the protected shores. Employees of the Baikal National Park and the Baikal-Lensky State Reserve note that the protected zone can be expanded due to the water area of the lake. All the necessary documentation to substantiate this proposal has already been prepared.
