As a result of operational work in the summer-autumn season, not a single case of poaching was detected. Such results were achieved thanks to many years of comprehensive work.
"The Security Service has been conducting operational activities in protected areas since 2007, and the Environmental Education Department informs, convinces, trains and inspires the residents of the region. During this time, the situation has changed dramatically: from poaching on an industrial scale to single detentions every few years," the report says.
During the year, the task forces covered more than 80,000 km on foot, on boats, snowmobiles, ATVs and SUVs. In addition, patrols of the Kronotsky, Koryaksky nature reserves and the South Kamchatka Federal Reserve were conducted from the air with the help of drones and from a helicopter.
Specialists of the reserve carried out other works this year. In particular, they continued to assess the reindeer capacity on the territory of the Kronotsky Reserve, studied the number of marine mammal populations and their distribution in the protected water area, studied the ichthyofauna of the Kronotsky Lake.
This year, the design of the tourist infrastructure facilities of the Uzon-Geyser Ring and the Valley of Geysers cordon was completed.
"A significant step this year was the strengthening of cooperation with educational institutions of the region. Experts from the School of Conservationists and the Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University have developed and will soon launch one of the first programs in Russia in the specialty "Nature Conservation". A unique training course "My Kamchatka is a protected land" has been tested and successfully implemented in 35 schools of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky," the press service reported.
