The joint directorate of the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve and the Shushensky Bor National Park has announced the start of the spring-summer field work season for scientists. At present, specialists are servicing photo traps, while collecting valuable photographic material. The next stage will be a visual census of the Siberian mountain goat from the water area of the reservoir in the coastal zone.
"This ungulate species is a background species for the reserve, and annual observations of its population dynamics, as well as age and sex composition, have been carried out for more than 10 years," the directorate's website says.
The opening of navigation on the reserve territory gave the start to field work.
"Due to the peculiarities of the geographical location and relief of the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve, which is located in the mountains of the Western Sayan, where there are no roads, and also due to the fact that its northern and eastern borders run along the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP reservoir, shipping plays an extremely important role in the work of this specially protected natural area," the directorate noted.
In the cold season, state inspectors and scientists travel along the prepared winter road with the help of special equipment - air cushion boats and snowmobiles. In winter, the road to the reserve cordons takes significantly longer than the movement on open water.
With the resumption of navigation on the reservoir, a new tourist season also opens on the reserve territory. However, the directorate noted that the issuance of passes for passage along the reservoir is limited from May 6 to the cancellation of the current special fire-fighting regime.
