The press service of the Nizhne-Svirsky State Nature Reserve reported that the institution's specialists are preparing for the bird banding season. From mid-spring to the end of autumn, the staff of the reserve, together with volunteers, will ring the birds at the Ladoga Ornithological Station.
Birds will be caught daily in large stationary traps and spider webs. When banding, the size and type of bird are taken into account. The ring should cause as little inconvenience as possible and be light.
Initially, the birds were ringed to study their migration routes and wintering grounds. Currently, the range of questions that banding allows you to answer has expanded. In combination with repeated trapping and in vivo examination, this procedure allows you to accumulate and analyze data on all stages of the life cycle and how the species adapts to changing environmental conditions. This information helps scientists identify differences and similarities between different bird species. In addition, this knowledge is needed to understand which species will be more adapted to global climate change.
